Where can my NBS guide take me?
Where you go with your guide very much depends on what you would like to experience and the ability level of you and/or your group, but we use Niseko’s world renowned gate system across the whole Niseko United area to access the amazing backcountry terrain on offer. This means all the backcountry is accessed via a ski lift, although sometimes there may be a small ‘bootpack’ (walking and carrying your skis) involved if this is something you are comfortable with.
Where your guide takes you will also depend on where it is safest to ski or ride on the day, as some gates can be closed if hazardous conditions are present.
We also offer backcountry guiding in the Rusutsu, Moiwa, Kiroro and Sappro Teine areas – just book via Backcountry Guiding Hokkaido instead.
What is the best time to visit Hokkaido for the ultimate backcountry guiding experience?
Conditions of course vary from season to season, but typically the most consistently snowy conditions can be found from late December through to February. March however can also be a glorious time to explore the backcountry, with the occasional unexpected powder day, and clearer skies and warmer temperatures making access to upper-mountain terrain easier (not to mention the incredible bluebird day views!).
Can a group of skiers and snowboarders go together with one backcountry guide?
Generally speaking this is absolutely fine. If you can let us know what equipment the majority of your group will be using then we can set you up with an appropriate guide – but please be aware that if they are a ski guide for example, they may have limited knowledge surrounding snowboard equipment, and vice versa for a snowboard guide with skiers.
It is important for snowboarders to be able to hold a strong traverse and maintain speed on flatter sections if they are wishing to join skiers, as if this is not something they are confident with then they could end up having a bit of a tough time! Feel free to get in touch with us to discuss what will be the right backcountry guiding option for your group and their ability level.
I have limited powder experience but I’d still like to go out into the backcountry. Is this possible?
We usually recommend having an ability of level 5 and above to get the full powder experience, but all of our guides are also instructors who will be more than happy to coach you on your powder skiing technique so that you can get the most out of your Japan skiing experience.
Are dates flexible in accordance with conditions?
Unfortunately not – our cancellation policy requires you to give us fifteen days’ notice in order to receive a full refund. However, if you have a multi-day backcountry guiding booking then our guides will of course tailor each day to suit the conditions.
What kind of insurance do I need to take part in backcountry guiding?
We recommend you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers ‘off-piste’ or ‘backcountry skiing/snowboarding’ when riding with a backcountry guide – the gate system is still considered to be an off-piste or backcountry environment. Most travel insurance providers have this as an optional extra so it worth checking that it is included prior to your trip.
Will I be taught how to use avalanche equipment?
Regardless of your backcountry skiing or snowboarding experience, your guide will always run you through an avalanche safety briefing and will teach you how to use any equipment you aren’t familiar with. The safety briefing includes:
- Transceiver testing and basic use (with the option to carry out a transceiver search if this is something you would like to practice)
- How to assemble and use the probe and shovel
- Rescue basics and other backcountry safety measures
What safety measures does NBS take for backcountry guiding?
It is important to understand that any backcountry access comes with inherent risks and is never 100% safe.
With this in mind, all of our guides are highly specialised and will do everything they can to put you and your group’s safety first. All of our guides hold dedicated avalanche and backcountry safety qualifications, and daily safety procedures are in place to ensure guides are as informed about current conditions and hazards as possible.
All of this, coupled with the extensive knowledge and experience of our guides means they will always make a plan for the day that is as safe as it can possibly be. This includes incorporating the skill level of your group to guarantee you are accessing suitable terrain.
Is avalanche safety equipment a requirement?
Yes, avalanche safety equipment (a transceiver and a backpack containing a shovel and a probe) are required when accessing the backcountry with our guides. These can be rented at NBS at additional cost. We also recommend wearing a helmet.
What skis or snowboard do I need?
We recommend a ski with a width of over 90 millimetres (100mm is often ideal) for a powder day on Hokkaido. A powder board is also a great choice for snowboarders. We have lots of options available for hire to suit the conditions of the day, and our team are on hand to recommend the best selection for you and your riding ability.
